Surviving Depression

Things to do to survive and actually get things done while wanting to stay in bed crying. Some require the help of a second person.

1. Tell someone how you feel. If someone knows, they can help give you a bit of encouragement when you need it.

2. Get someone to push you out of bed. Once you're up, you may actually stay up.

3. Eat something. Anything you want. Eat it to get some energy going. And don't judge yourself for whatever it is. Candy, dry cereal, leftover spaghetti; anything is good to get going.

4. Keep moving. A body in motion tends to stay in motion.

5. Do something that makes you feel pretty. Wear your favorite shirt or something fabulous. Anything that brings a bit of beauty to your day.

6. Cry sometimes and then stop. Give yourself permission to cry, but put a time limit on it.

7. Don't go near your bed if you're tempted to get back into it. If the temptation is too strong, pull off all the sheets and wash them. The bed is less tempting without its cozy nest of blankets.

8. Give yourself plenty of time. Talking yourself into doing things may take a little time, so make sure to allow for it.

9. When your inlaws come over for a Christmas lunch, put on your "social" mask and be the perfect hostess. Just shove that depression down and keep it down until about 30 hours later when you think you're feeling good and all the kids are in bed and your husband starts to get intimate and things are warming up and then you start bawling for no reason and you really just hate yourself because you can't just be normal for one day.

10. There's really no good way to handle this. Just when you think things are going your way, something happens. Or it may not. All you really can do is keep going. Keep getting up every day and try to believe that maybe this day won't be a fight. And when it is, believe that you can make it through the pain once more.

It's hard not knowing day to day how you're going to feel. I usually do the "fake it til you make it" approach. If things get too bad I have a few tricks as well. Go outside for a while, exercise, make one of my kids laugh hysterically, or chocolate. Chocolate always works.
